SF Analyticon Limited

Stuart Forbes led Shell's work on the characterisation of petroleum substances and chemicals for REACH from 2009 until his retirement at the end of 2013. This involved coordination, planning and execution of the experimental work together with compilation of several hundred analytical reports in support of registration submissions to ECHA. A variety of analytical techniques were employed for substance identification including: SIMDIS-GC; DHA-GC; Reformulyzer-GC; GCxGC; HPLC; TLC-FID; IR; UV/Vis; NMR; MS; DSC; EDXRF; XRD; XPS; ICP-AES; UVF and SEM-EDX. When required, chemical compositional analysis was supplemented by a range of physico-chemical measurements such as density, viscosity, flash point, pour point, auto ignition temperature, water solubility and partition coefficient.

Substances characterised included a range of petroleum products (gasolines, kerosines, gas oils, base oils, fuel oils, waxes, bitumens); chemicals (glycols, higher olefins, alcohols, ethers, aromatics, solvents, surfactants, catalysts, ignition improvers, grease thickeners); biofuels; gas-to-liquid products; and inorganic substances (sulphur; gypsum).
